I usually read four or five books at a time – one or two book-books, a read-aloud with my daughter, an e-book, and an audiobook in the car. Here’s what’s on my bookshelf:
THE EXO PROJECT by Andrew DeYoung. Andrew is an author from St. Paul, Minnesota, whose debut YA Sci Fi released April 4. I don’t read much science fiction, but the story had me hooked from the first page. Smart, smooth writing and multiple POV done right . . . and it even had me in tears at one point. This one kept disappearing into my son’s backpack – he loved it, too.
READ-ALOUD WITH BIRDY:
My daughter and I have two books going right now: HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN and BETSY-TACY AND TIB by Maud Hart Lovelace. The Betsy-Tacy books were my absolute favorites growing up and I’ve read them dozens of times. The books take place in Deep Valley, Minnesota (Mankato, where I lived for two years during grad school). Betsy was a writer, so I wanted to be just like her. Birdy and I tried to read the books when she was a little younger and she wasn’t very interested, but we started again recently and she’s kind of obsessed. We’re planning a trip to Mankato this spring to visit all the Betsy-Tacy places.
MAUD HART LOVELACE’S DEEP VALLEY: A GUIDEBOOK OF MANKATO PLACES IN THE BETSY-TACY SERIES. Birdy and I are having a great time looking at all the photographs and planning our trip.
GRAY WOLF ISLAND by Tracey Neithercott. This gorgeous, atmospheric read will be published in October of 2017.
ROLL by Darcy Miller. Another soon-to-be-published book (May 23), this one a middle grade novel with lots of pigeons, by a Minnesota native.
PERSUASION by Jane Austen. Every summer I make a goal to reread every Austen novel and every summer I fail. This year I’m starting early, and I’m starting with Persuasion.
THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas. This just arrived today and I’m tempted to drop everything else on my to-do list to read it. My son has already laid claim to it as well.
